Artifact 1 -
Social-emotional aspects of music
For my 1st grade students I presented the song, “How I’m Feeling Today” by QuaverEd, and we applied how to compose lyrics to a song. This provided an experience for them to create a song that was unique to them. In addition to exploring how music can help us cope with certain feelings. The feelings we discussed were happy, cranky, worry, silly and better. For each feeling, we figured out lyrics that would be best suited for that feeling. In this lesson, it showed my students the ability to express one’s ideas and/or feelings can be done through the composition of music. It can help them as well as others through listening to their songs. This would further help them with their Social Emotional Learning (SEL) inside and outside the classroom.
If I had to change something, it would be presenting this to my kindergarten and 2nd grade students to this song as well. I believe in the importance of SEL and teaching the competencies that come with it. There is a lesson that is offered within this song that goes over different emotions such as frustration, ecstatic, scared, etc. It could allow us to further develop these SEL competencies whilst learning to appreciate music and preparing them for a global environment.
Artifact 2 -
Connection between cultures
I didn’t have a chance to present this Since Time Immemorial (STI) lesson to my students. But if I did, this is how I believe it would meet this standard. By presenting this video from Molly of Denali, this would offer students the opportunity to experience other cultures through the connection with music. As a teacher, this would allow me to expand their musical knowledge from a new point of view. Also, this would emphasize concepts we are already learning such as the steady beat or strong and weak beats.
Furthermore, this can promote the importance the drum is to the Indigenous culture as well as others such as Africa. The drum in some cultures brings a sense of community, pride and unity. I hope to implement this in the fall and support their education into the STI curriculum.
